You watched a documentary titled “The Illusionists.”
1)Now, thinking about that, begin by writing one carefully crafted sentence, explain WHO or WHAT are “the illusionists.”
An illusion is a false belief.
2)Next, with this definition in mind, write one carefully crafted sentence that explains what false belief the illusionists are perpetuating. HINT: this false belief is general and does not apply to any singular race, gender or place.
Choose an appearance norm [such as hairlessness, or ‘fair’ skin or relaxed hair addressed in any of this week’s readings or films.
3) Using this norm, explain, in 3-4 carefully crafted sentences, the assumptions it rests upon. Your job is to expose the SOCIALLY CONSTRUCTED ideas that inform the norm.
In your sentences, be sure to address how any combination of cultural assumptions about RACE, GENDER, AGE, CLASS and SEXUALITY and/or GEOGRAPHY shape this norm—that’s where you get INTERSECTIONAL!
HEADS UP! One of your sentences must include a brief verbatim quotation from one of this week’s readings. Make sure you cite that quotation properly. [***don’t worry about a WORKS CITED page for this one]
Here is an example of how this looks:
When women grew out their body hair as part of an optional class assignment, doing so “came at great personal cost to women, in part revealing networks of people—partners, family members, co-workers, and friends—invested in controlling women’s bodies” (Fahs 2019, 13)
• Fahs is the author of the reading
• 2019 is the year the book was published (where Fahs chapter is from)
• 13 is the page number where you find the quotation
RULES:
• Write in full sentences with proper grammar, spelling and punctuation.
• 250-500 words TOTAL
• Includes a brief verbatim quotation from one of this week’s readings, properly cited [see example above]
