Problem Statement: The problem addressed in this qualitative capstone is whether America can keep its educational institutions safe and stop gun violence in American schools. And if so, at what cost? According to an article written in gallup.com, an estimated 44% of Americans are living in what has been labeled “gun households”. Gun households are those with guns either somewhere inside the home, or anywhere on the property of that home (Saad, 2020). With those nationwide statistics, there is no wander why gun violence has increased 9% in 2021 (Lybrand, 2021). The effect gun violence has had on the American schools system is alarming. Over the last two decades America has had to deal with the harsh reality that although schools are supposed to be safe and secure places for American children to attend; as proven in Littleton Colorado, Newtown Connecticut, and Blacksburg Va., and others, this is simply no longer the case. With the mixture of gun availability, and education facilities ill-equipped in regards to security, the question if America can do anything to prevent gun violence in its schools must be asked.
