Writing Narratives
For this module, you will write a non-fiction narrative in which you tell the story of an event that impacted your life. For example, you could tell a coming-of-age story (bildungsroman) in which you describe events through the eyes of a child but then evaluate them after the fact from the view of an adult. The tone of this story may be serious or humorous. For example, you might tell a humorous story about the time you discovered your dad was playing the part of Santa and found out that Santa doesn’t exist. You can also write a serious story. For example, Amy Tan (author of the Joy Luck Club and The Kitchen God’s Wife) relates a non-fiction narrative when she first came to grips with the true motives of her somewhat controlling mother, rather than viewing or casting judgment on her mother through the perspective and understanding of a child.
