Using the Born-Haber Cycle, compare the lattice energies of MgO(s) and NaCl(s). What is the
largest determining factor in the difference between the two lattice energies (meaning, why
are they so different)? Clearly show ALL of your work for the Born-Haber Cycle. (20 points)
Some helpful information: Be sure to consider Lewis structures when you are breaking bonds
so you know what type of bonds you are breaking. The electron affinity for oxygen going from
O to O2− is 737 kJ/mol (the literature information says 140 kJ/mol, but that is for one electron.
It takes extra energy to get the second electron because it has to overcome the repulsion of
the 1st electron)
