The assignment is divided into two parts 400 words for each part
Read the 2016 article titled “Murderabilia” https://theweek.com/articles/662522/murderabilia-inside-weird-online-market-serial-killer-artifacts
Answers the following questions:
1. In your opinion (no right or wrong answer), why is there a market for serial killer memorabilia/novelties (in other words, why do people buy these
products)?
2. In your opinion (no right or wrong answer), should dealers like Eric Holler (mentioned in the “Murderabilia” article) be permitted to profit/make money from
“Murderabilia?” Why or why not?
3. In your opinion (no right or wrong answer), should the victims (or their family members) of the serial killers featured in these products receive any of the
profits/money from the “Murderabilia” products? Why or why not?
4. In your opinion (no right or wrong answer), what affect does this kind of activity (the selling of this type of product) potentially have on victims or victim’s
family members?
Part 2: answer all (4) of the following questions
1. According to the Belbot et al. textbook (not a personal opinion), does the press/the media have the right to have unlimited access to interview a select
inmate (yes/no)? What rights do the media have in this type of situation? Be sure to paraphrase (use your own words and do not use any quotes).
2. According to the Belbot et al. textbook, which specific Constitutional Amendment (by name/#) is applied to this issue? Also, name one of the three pivotal
U.S. Supreme Court cases that decided this issue (as discussed in Chapter 3 – not a personal opinion).
3. Based on what you read in Belbot et al. Chapter 3 (not a personal opinion), discuss freedom of the press issues versus the security concerns of the prison
(or jail).**
4. Apply this issue (freedom of speech vs. security concerns) to convicted murderer Jodi Arias—Jodi Arias gave multiple interviews while in jail before,
during, and after her murder trial in Arizona (one even right after the jury found her guilty of 1st Degree Murder). If you were a jail official (meaning, someone
with the power to allow/not allow inmate interviews), how would you have dealt with this? And, in your opinion, what problems could arise from this type of
inmate interviewing?
