Questions for Chapter 1
1. The first Chapter of our text mentions four negotiation traps. Have you experienced any of these while negotiating in the workplace or for compensation when being hired? Describe which trap you fell for and the situation.
2. One of the reasons people fall short in negotiation is the human tendency to satisfice. To satisfice is to settle for something less than you could otherwise have. Can you think of a time when you settled for something less than you could otherwise have had? How did this affect future negotiations?
Questions for Chapter 2
3. Linkage effects refer to the fact that some negotiations affect other negotiations. Can you think of a time in your professional career when a linkage effect was negative? How about when it was positive?
4. Preparation is a key factor before negotiation. What kind of skills or strategies do you use to prepare? Can you relate to any of the three general skills (self-assessment, perspective-taking, situational awareness) as mentioned in this chapter?
