Part 1: Week 7 Discussion board: QUESTION: Select either A or B for your main response. When you respond to others, please respond to at least one student who answered a different question than you did. A. Discuss some developments in science and the visual arts that paralleled the rise of the new music of the 20th Century. Describe the attitudes towards tonality (having a strong tonal center) and the use of dissonance in 20th century music. What new rhythmic techniques were used in contrast to the classical and romantic eras? In what ways do these musical techniques parallel artistic techniques used during the same period? B. Select one musical work and one work of visual art (painting, sculpture, drawing, architecture, mosaic, etc.) and discuss the similarities in treatment of the elements of music and visual arts. Focus on one musical and visual art style from the 20th century (impressionism, symbolism, expressionism, neoclassicism, serialism, realism, nationalism, primitivism, exoticism, jazz, minimalism, aleatoric, electronic). Discuss how the work of art and the musical piece demonstrate the musical style you have chosen. If possible, include a link to the work of art and the YouTube or audio file. Part B: Classical Music Research Paper Here is the music topic chosen to address: Music Research Paper Topic Folk, Blue grass and Reggae music I am looking to discuss the history, similarities and differences between Folk music and Reggae music. It seems that music may be categorized based on its originality. Folk music refers to the type of music that originates from traditional popular culture. Most of the music is of unknown authorship and is transmitted from one generation to another orally. Blue grass music is a form of American root music. This type of music has mixed genre in Irish, Scottish and English. Reggae is a type of folk music that traces its origin to Jamaica. However, it is important to note that the word reggae denotes a type of music with genres such as ska and rock. I will use the Brandman library and other online resources to describe each type of music in the past and present, including answers to many of the questions included in the “questions to consider” portion of our assignment.
