1. How did the Industrial Revolution affect America’s environment? Why did some
believe that these problems outweighed the benefits of industry?
2. How did the Conservation Movement begin? Why was this movement initiated by
upper class families from northeastern cities? What were their goals?
3. How did Conservationists initiate the idea of national parks? How did they defend
this idea, and why was it so difficult?
4. How did John Muir contribute to the Conservation Movement? How did American
society gradually accept and implement his ideals?
5. How did President Theodore Roosevelt contribute to the Conservation Movement?
How did he convince Americans to embrace this national agenda?
6. How did Aldo Leopold contribute to the Conservation Movement? Despite the
progress made by Muir and Roosevelt, why did Leopold believe his ideals were so
important and necessary?
