Clinical Application of Biomedical Sciences
General Instructions
Use the template to complete the activity. This is from the clinical case you have chosen for your comprehensive case presentation. You should use complete sentences and avoid using “bullet points.” Pay attention to the word limits and required sub-headings. The Grading Rubric can help guide you with expectations. DO NOT INCLUDE ANY SPECIFIC PATIENT IDENTIFIERS. You must include your name and UIN number.
GRADING
The 5 sections of your paper will be graded according to the grading rubric. The paper is worth 5% of your overall course grade. 70% is required for a Pass. Any “Standard not Met”, will result in automatic failure.

Clinical Application of Biomedical Sciences Competency Evaluation
Date:
Name:
1. Brief summary of the clinical case. Briefly list the main features of the case using two or three sentences in each section.
Chief complaint
Relevant Intra- and Extra-oral examination findings
Relevant medical history including current medications
Treatment plan
Treatment plan modifications and outcomes
2. Biomedical science topic
– In at least 200 but no more than no more than 400 words in total, discuss the biomedical science topic which you decided to investigate in more detail. Please explain: a) why you chose this topic, and; b) how it would help you understand more about the patient’s systemic or oral health issue or status.
Your biomedical science topic could cover:
-any aspect or oral or systems biology (at a foundational level including, but not limited to, relevant biochemistry, physiology, anatomy and so on);
-or the pathophysiology of oral or systemic disease (including, but not limited to, genetics, metabolism, neoplasia, immune disorders, infection, and so on);
-or the pharmacological intervention and its consequences (including, but not limited to, the molecular and physiologic mechanism of action of drugs, and their side effects and consequences for dental treatment).
3. Search terms and sources
Describe how you decided on which resources to use. List the textbooks you used (if applicable), which scholarly articles you used (if applicable), and which search terms you used. You must use more than one source of information. Lecture notes and handouts are not an acceptable source.
Your citations should be in a standard format and include authors, book or article title, journal, pages, edition, volume, year.
Example format for journal article:
Scisor, IN and Nine, CA (2018). The role of teeth in eating. Journal of Teeth, 24, 101-111.
Example format for a book:
Author, AN (2018) A book of important information, 3rd edition. Chapter 6, 204-214. Publisher, Publisher location.
4. Synopsis of biomedical science topic findings
-In at least 200, but no more than 400 words in total, summarize the findings about your topic with the following sections:
a) Synopsis of the most important information about the topic. Use your own words. Don’t not just copy and paste directly from your resource;
b) Information you found which you had not known about before;
5. Application of biomedical science in clinical practice
a) Discussion of how this information is relevant to the case.
b) When you leave school you might not have full access to resources (such as online books and journals) provided by the school library. Identify other resources (such as US government sites, professional societies, organizations and foundations) you will be able to access in the future which would be useful in finding current best practices and evidence. Be specific to this case and also discuss more generally. Provide at least two resources.
