Team Project Presentation Requirements and Scoring
Macroeconomic Analysis Spring 2018 DMA
The team project explores the connections between macroeconomic conditions and business performance. These connections are expected to differ by company and industry. They can also vary over time. Finally the project should recognize/show that business performance is also connected to other conditions and drivers. Incorporating a range of performance drivers avoids overstating the importance of macroeconomic conditions.
The deliverables for the project are a paper, a power point slide pack, and a team presentation. The paper, slides, and presentation will be scored on the basis of content and quality of the analysis as determined by the Professor. Teams meeting the requirements will receive a B for the project. In order to earn a higher grade the team must go beyond the requirements. All team members must be included in the presentation. The presentation will also be scored using the stated requirements. Student (peer) scoring will also be done. Student scoring will focus on identifying areas where teams went beyond the requirements of the project.
Project Paper Requirements
The following are requirements for the project content and deliverables: The paper should include answers to all of the questions and more, the power point just show the highlights only, and the presentation should focus on what the team discovered and why it is important.
1. What multinational company is being assessed and what does it do? Include key information on its revenue model, its brand name and ethics/values.
2. What business performance measure was selected for analysis?
3. What variables do past studies indicate explain movements in this measure? Be sure to discuss how at least one macroeconomic variable affects the performance measure?
4. What period of business performance was analyzed and what data and statistical analyses were done to determine what drives business performance?
5. Present and explain the statistical relationship (equation) estimated for business performance? What do changes in each right hand variable in the equation including at least one macro measures mean (contribute to) movements in the business performance measure?
6. What findings or results did the team discover about the performance of the business?
7. What conclusions can be drawn from the project that you would want to share with the business?
8. What did the team learn from this project?
Remember that answering the required questions will meet the requirements but the goal of the team should be the EXCEED THE REQUIREMENTS and distinguish the team’s work. There are many ways to do this. The Professor is available to discuss options with team members.
Presentation Requirements
The following are requirements for the presentation:
1. Presenters will stand in the front of the room as a group during their presentation.
2. A team leader should introduce the project and present the final slide (conclusions).
3. Team members should be introduced and their roles explained by the team leader.
4. Each team member must present at least one slide. Presenter voices should be loud and clear so everyone in the room can hear and understand what is said.
5. Presenters should face their audience, engage them, and not read the slides.
6. Presenters are expected to select only key points from the slides. Not all information on a slide needs to be presented.
7. Individual team members should be supportive of each other. Team members should project proper body language and attention.
8. Handoffs between team members should be professional and as seamless as possible.
9. Teams may give handouts or grabbers to the audience.
10. Presentation should last at least 10 and no more than 15 minutes. Presentations should be practiced before they are given so that any kinks are worked out.
11. Slides should not use technical language. For example the p value for inflation was 0.04.
12. The presentation should focus on findings and results.
13. Teams should motivate class mates to be involved in their presentations such as by asking questions on slides before showing the content for the slide.
Deliverables
The paper should be professionally presented with graphics, pictures, perfect grammar and spelling. A set of references and citations should be included in the paper as an appendix. The data and all supporting information and quantitative should also be provided in the appendix so that an interested person can duplicate the team’s results.
Results should be assessed using the 80/20 rule. This means that if the statistics are consistent with a confidence level of 80 percent or higher the results deserve to be discussed. Since this is an early exploratory project it is not expected to yield final results. Rather, the proper context for the project and deliverables is to consider it as the first of several analyses that need to be done before actually incorporating it in an annual tactical plan.
Slides should be talking point-style – not complete sentences. Slides font size should be 20 or larger and easy to read. Images on slides are encouraged.
Credit must be given to all other persons, works and data sources used in the study. Proper citations, references and notes should be provided in the appendix and referred to by presenters.
Papers and slide packs should be posted by one team member in the Project Assignment folder in Sakai before the last class session.
A short question and answer period will be provided for students to ask questions and give feedback to teams. Positive feedback on things well done is encouraged.
Class member who talk during the presentations and are not respectful of the presenters will have points deducted from their team presentation scores. Students will fill in and submit the peer scoring sheet to the professor at the end of the presentations. Students will not fill out the peer information for their own teams.
Scoring
The scoring for the paper, slides and presentation will be as follows:
1. The top score for the paper is 50 points. The top score for the slide pack and presentation is 25 points. The total points for the three project deliverables is 75 points.
2. The paper will be scored on the quality of the responses to the core questions listed above and how the paper exceeds the requirements.
3. The slide pack and presentation will also be scored on the requirements listed above and how the slide pack and presentation exceeded the requirements. Student/peer reports will be considered when adding points for a presentation that exceeds the requirements of the project.
