Choose one of the six (6) ANA Standards of Practice (starting on p. 53). Compare and contrast how the practice of an RN is different from your current role in
healthcare for that standard. Provide specific examples to supports your explanation.
Standard number 2 – Diagnosis. “The registered nurse analyzes assessment data to determine actual or potential diagnoses, problems, and issues” (ANA,
2021). As an LPN, I do data collection for the RNs that I work with. I talk with the patients and obtain information on their current health state as well as their
health history. I then gather my data and hand it off to the RN to further analysis. The RN creates nursing diagnosis and care plans for these patients.
Discuss an experience in your life (as a patient, family member or professional) where an RN demonstrated one of the competencies from the ANA Standard
of Practice.
There are multiple times a day where I see RNs demonstrate this competency: “Documents diagnoses, problems, strengths, and issues in a manner that
facilitates the development of the expected outcomes and collaborative plan” (ANA, 2021). RNs in my department develop care plans including diagnosis,
problems, strengths, and issues that we refer back to each time we speak with the patient. There are interventions in here that we carry out. There are
specific time frames for each goal and we evaluate the patients process.

The ANA Standards of Practice describes the competent level of nursing care, known as the nursing process. The six levels of care in the nursing process
include assessment, diagnosis, outcome identification, planning, implementation, and evaluation. The assessment phase requires a Registered Nurse to use
a critical thinking systematic approach to collect pertinent data and analyze information about the patient. In the assessment phase a Registered Nurse is
expected to assess and identify the patient’s health problems and or illness. The assessment also includes the patient’s emotional, spiritual, physiological
and psychological. According to the ANA, the RN prioritizes data collection based on the healthcare consumer’s immediate condition, the anticipated needs
of the healthcare consumer or situation, or both (ANA 2021). In contrast, as a Licensed Practical Nurse in my scope of practice I am able to collect data. I
work at a skilled nursing facility and when I have a new admission I contribute to the admission by recording subjective and objective patient data and
gathering information. As a seasoned nurse I can use my nursing judgment and assist the RN in the assessment process. Although I can not create a nursing
diagnosis, being part of and understanding the care plan is important.

As a patient being on the other side, I can honestly say I have encountered Registered Nurses who adhere to the ANA standard of Practice. I had surgery in
2011, where I had a lumpectomy to my right breast. I had a large lump that was causing me a lot of discomfort. The RN demonstrated caring, but therapeutic
communication. I felt comfortable to share information and she understood my concerns. She was able to put me at ease, when I was stressed waiting to go
into the operating room. I have trouble communicating at times, because I am so nervous, so at times I stay quiet. When she asked if I had any questions, I
replied, “No.” The RN was able to read and interpret my body language and that is a skill. Similar to Nurse Joanne is our recent discussion, it takes that
special person to be empathetic and have human interaction.
