Britain History Essay
How was ‘Britishness’ understood and who counted as ‘British’ c.1837-1914, and how did this affect Britain’s engagement with the world in this period? Refer to at least THREE individual case studies and make sure that your answer assesses changes and continuities over the whole period (c.1837-1914), and in the British Isles as well as the wider world.
Notes:
· DO refer to historians’ views: ‘As Bernard Porter argues’ Or ‘Despite Colin Matthew’s assertion that…’
· Refer to Porter book, tutorial readings and extra material, plus material read whilst preparing your essay (I attached the reading list for you, please feel free to ask me sending you any article you cannot find.)
· The question asks you to consider the entire period, i.e. c.1837-1914 (don’t answer with regard to one period/place/event only, e.g. ‘Great Exhibition’ or ‘Crimean War’)
· Use specific, appropriate examples wherever possible, from different places and times (e.g. compare India with Ireland/Crimean War with Boer War)
· Avoid memorizing long quotations, but one or two short quotations may be useful (e.g. Bean quotation about Australian nationalism)
· Refer to AT LEAST three individual case studies
· Assess the whole period (c.1837-1914)
· Consider the British Isles as well as the wider world
· Include at least three different primary sources
· Include at least three different secondary sources/historians (refer to by name and/or work e.g. Porter in Lion’s Share, J.A. Mangan in The Games Ethic)
· The goal is for a thoughtful, nuanced response, which draws from both primary and secondary sources and three case studies to answer the question with regard to the whole period (c.1837-1914) and the British Isles as well as wider word…
· Separate bibliography into case studies, primary sources and secondary sources
