Topic 1:
The four principles of healthcare ethics include;
1. Respect for autonomy
2. Beneficence
3. Non-maleficence
4. Justice
Outline these principles and relate them to the following scenario:
‘Most women value fetal health and development very highly and will go to great lengths to ensure they have done the best for their fetus. But for many reasons some women will act in a way that is contrary to fetal wellbeing. Some examples include smoking, drinking alcohol or taking illicit drugs during pregnancy. How might you respond if a woman you are caring for refuses treatment or otherwise acts in a way that may threaten the wellbeing of the fetus?’

OR
Topic 2:
Considering the legal frameworks relevant to midwifery practice in Australia, discuss how the midwife might respond to the following scenario:
‘You have received a written complaint from the mother of a 17 year old woman whom you recently cared for. During the antenatal period the woman could not decide whether she would agree to the administration of Vitamin K for her baby. You gave her verbal information about the risks of not having Vitamin K on one occasion. You did not document this discussion.
Shortly after the birth, you raised the matter again with the woman; she declined Vitamin K. You wrote in the notes ‘declined Vit K’. The baby subsequently developed Vitamin K deficiency bleeding and suffered brain damage. The grandmother says you should have made more effort to get her daughter to agree to Vitamin K administration, and since she was only 17, you should have given the injection to the baby anyway.’
