ETHICAL DILEMMA: The Future In Your Hand
Finals week…. and you are sitting down to the final exam of your college career. You have generally done well in academics but have also been recognized by your peers and the school as someone who strives to serve God.
A church in Alberta has contacted you and has offered you a position that seems ideally suited to your gifts and interests. They want, and need, the job filled immediately. The only remaining qualification which you must fill before you can officially take the position is that you must officially graduate with all requirements met.
The last week has been a whirl of events. Friends to say goodbye to. late nights. Cramming for finals. Now you realize that you blew it. There’s only one major question on the exam and you didn’t study that material at all. And this is in the class where you received poor marks all term long. It looks quite clear that you’re going to fail the course even though you’ll ace all of the others.
You sit in your desk feeling sick, praying, and feeling sick again. It’s been ½ hour and nothing’s come to you. Then, accidentally, you notice the paper of the person just ahead of you and see some words. You go on to read several sentences. That’s it! The key to the question. Your brain jogs into gear. Some memories from class return. You begin to write quickly and answer the question. Then, time is called.
You don’t even think about it again until days later. It’s the Thursday before graduation. In your mailbox is your exam – 51%. Your mark for the class is a minimum pass – a 1.0. But with your other grades you will pass the year and get your degree. Your other mail is a letter from Alberta. It’s the Chair of the Deacon’s Board at the church and he writes, “Just one question. A formality really from what we know of you. The Board is meeting Saturday night to confirm your call to the church. Please contact me before then to confirm that you will graduate and meet all requirements.” You look at the exam in your hand. What do you do?
