Nowadays, Along with a well-developed society, there are more and more new technologies coming into use in our life. Most of them brought substantial positive impacts to our community, whether making convenience to our life or boosting the economy. Artificial Intelligence is one of the top new technology, which is being used widely today. However, the general public is heatedly discussing whether it will bring better economic circumstances and life for human beings or not. The economy is one of an essential aspect for our society, and it is just like an invisible hand to control every single person of us. Thus, it is vital to learn if A.I. could bring positive effects to the economy. From my perspective, I think A.I. brings plenty of benefits to us by boosting the economy and connecting business to business and business to customers. Still, we have to use it wisely to avoid negative impacts.
First of all, A.I., robot and machine learning have enhanced the economies of many nations and brought positive effects to many companies. Utilizing A.I. will help companies to increase their economic interests. According to an article, Notes From The AI Frontier Modeling The Impact Of AI On The World Economy, written by Jacques Bughin et al. professors from five different universities, authors wrote a report and showed data to prove the A.I. actually helps the economy. First, the Authors believe A.I. will bring around an extra 13 trillion dollars worth to the economy of the world before 2030 (par. 6). In the meanwhile, the world’s GDP will be boosted by about 1.2 percent per year (par. 6). The A.I. frontier companies will have 20% to 25% economic interest (par.10). But for those who utilize A.I. lately, they will become laggards. Second, the authors claim that applying A.I. to society will increase the production rate and speed up the impact of the economy (par11). Based on all the data and information above, we may learn that the A.I. not only could bring a mass of benefits for companies but also the companies have to develop and utilize A.I. in the future to avoid becoming a laggard. An article, The Economic Value of Artificial Intelligence, written by Irving Wladawsky-Berger, a Research Affiliate at MIT, points out the reason why China is taking the lead in productivity. Most goods are made in China because of the investment of A.I. of manufacturing industry from China is higher than that from European countries and the United States (par. 5). The author claims that the Chinese economy is benefited from A.I. by increasing 26% GDP (par.5). Furthermore, the author uses the AI Impact Index to evaluate the impact of AI on eight main global sectors: Financial Services, Automotive, and Healthcare have the most effect from A.I. Summing up with all the factors above, the A.I. could benefit the economy by increasing productivity, and companies need the A.I. to promote their profits.
Second, besides making the world more productive, A.I. also boosts the economy by connecting business to business and business to customer. In the article, Economics of Artificial Intelligence: Implications for the Future of Work, written by Ernst Ekkehardt, a Chief Macroeconomist, the author points out a word called “Price Discrimination” — a form created by A.I. (Ernst 16). Based on the author: “the use of AI in helping to reduce matching frictions – irrespective of its task substitution nature – also creates more opportunities for market interconnection and exchange (Ernst 16).” In other words, price discrimination connects the global market and create chances for transaction and deal. A.I. may connect companies that have the same interest or same goal together, which benefits companies from all around the world to cooperate for their business much easier through AI. Moreover, as reported by an article, AI’s Increasing Role In Customer Service, written by Walch Kathleen, an AI and Machine Learning expert, the author states that AI can improve customer satisfaction, which connects business to customers. Based on the author, A.I. bots could stay online 24 hours everyday, which provides more convenience for customers compared with artificial staff. The author states the A.I. bots could recognize and solve customers’ problems more easily in order to satisfy customers’ demands (par. 4). Consumption is one of the four key components for GDP; one of the most important terms of economic — consumption increases lead to a rise in GDP. Therefore, excellent customer service is vital to convincing customers to consume, and A.I. bots could be qualified for this job (par. 5). Furthermore, according to the article, “Since AI can pull data from several sources, it allows machines to factor in details like geographical location, weather, events, or personal preferences and displays the most relevant content to customers (Kathleen 6).” A.I. can understand more information and preference of the customer, thus selling the product to the one who has high interest. The author also gives an example of how Starbucks uses their A.I. (par 7). The author claims that Starbucks uses A.I. to capture customers’ expense calendar, and they reward them based on the amount of expenditure, which may attract the general public to consume. In the article, the authors evaluated 702 jobs that exist today. They surprisingly discovered that around half of the jobs would disappear within ten years. In the section, the authors indicate that the driver will disappear soon, especially the truck driver. The authors point out that along with the automatic driving technique becoming mature, the non-life safety driver will be replaced soon. And once the unemployment rate increases, the society and the economy have huge negative impacts. Luckily, people point out some solutions to this issue in the future. Although A.I. might lead to a direct substitution of jobs and tasks currently performed by workers, there is a complementary increase in jobs and tasks necessary to use, run, and supervise the new machines. In the article, Economics of Artificial Intelligence: Implications for the Future of Work, Ekkehardt claims that There are always new jobs popping up along with the development of society. Many works will transit to a different mode that cannot be replaced by A.I. For example, many workers can be transited to remote and supervise the robot ( par. 38). Thus, The potential concern for A.I. could have a huge impact on the general public. However, new jobs will increase along with the new technology developed, which will decrease the impact of unemployment.
