Take the time to carefully assess the argument before writing. Remember that the goal of a solid analysis is to display a focused interpretation of an argument in order to deepen our audience’s knowledge. More specifically, this paper should demonstrate a superior understanding of the author’s claim, main assumptions and evidence. The body of the paper will avoid general summary and provide detailed examination of both denotative language and connotative signs. Finally, the conclusion should express a measured and thoughtful judgment regarding some aspect of the American Success Myth.
Choose one of the following options below:
Analyze Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale as an argument about The American Dream on the demise. If the American Success Myth is about “life , liberty and the pursuit of happiness,” then is Gilead’s inverted version really a possibility in our society? Be sure to assess at least three sections of text and decide whether or not you are convinced that our American Dream today contains parallel problems to that of Gilead.
Evaluate Margret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale as an argument that women’s rights and liberties are increasing endangered in our society. Assess at least three sections of text in an effort to decide if you believe that this 1980’s novel is still an important feminist warning today.
Analyze The Social Network for its critique of Mark Zuckerberg’s version of the American Dream. Pay close attention to the film’s portrayal of the wealthy upper-class environment at Harvard as well as Zuckerberg’s take-no-prisoners brand of personal success. Your paper should include the evaluation at least three specific scenes.
Analyze the the textual argument from any of the articles in Rereading America Ch. 4. Focus on whether or not the author’s American Dream assertions are made in a compelling and convincing manner.
Feel free to use one of the Rereading America texts as a secondary source, but include one more source from outside of our class materials.
Your paper should be at least four pages, use two secondary sources, provide plenty of textual interpretation, use MLA format, and include a Works Cited page.
