Case A: Jared, Melody, Carla and Bobby
Melody and Jared are divorcing. They have two children who they love very much. Their oldest child is twelve (Carla) and youngest child is ten (Bobby). Both children are very outgoing. How should the parents inform their children that they are divorcing and why?
Case B: Donald, Marilyn, Dana and Kevin
Marilyn has two teenage children, Dana, age 15, and Kevin, age 17. Dana and Kevin have been arguing on a regular basis at home and school since their parents divorced two years ago. Dana believes that her mother did not sincerely try to keep the family together and Kevin believes that his entire family is angry at him for various reasons. Kevin does not get along with his father’s new wife because she failed to convince his father that he is a good son. Kevin is oppositional when he is around his mother and stepmother. Both Dana and Kevin live with their father Donald. What types of limits should Donald set with both his children and what types of support might be helpful to this entire family and why?
Case C: Denise, Dave, Mya and Clayton
In September when school starts, Denise Clark’s youngest daughter Mya will begin kindergarten. Denise is very happy for her daughter. Denise is divorced from Mya’s father and recently remarried. Mya’s father, Clayton wants to escort Mya to school on her first day with his former wife Denise. Denise’s new husband Dave disagrees and is quite angry. How should Mya’s parents and stepfather deal with this situation and why? What steps should they take to avoid conflict and hostility in the future and why?
Case D: Marcus and Kevin
Your co-worker Pam shared that her son Marcus recently married. Marcus is gay. Marcus and his husband Kevin intend to adopt a baby in the next year. They are now saving for an egg donor, a surrogate and in vitro fertilization. Pam is concerned about the future child’s psychological adjustment, stability, academic success and social relationships given that he or she will have two gay parents. What types of advice can you offer to Pam and why?
